A businessman from Gujarat found himself ensnared in a complex and devastating scam, resulting in a staggering loss of ₹95 lakh, all stemming from what seemed like an innocuous friend request on Facebook. Parag Desai, the unfortunate victim, detailed his ordeal to the Cyber Crime Police Station, revealing a harrowing tale of trust betrayed and financial ruin.
It all began innocently enough when Desai received a friend request from a woman on Facebook, whom he later identified as Steff Mhiz. Little did he know that this seemingly casual connection would spiral into a nightmare of deceit and deception. As their friendship blossomed, the communication swiftly transitioned to WhatsApp, where Desai and Steff engaged in what appeared to be amicable conversation.
However, beneath the veneer of camaraderie lurked a sinister motive. Steff, cunning and persuasive, presented Desai with a tantalizing business proposition: her company purportedly required herbal products from India, and she suggested Desai act as the intermediary. According to her proposal, Desai would procure these products at a cost of ₹1 lakh per packet and sell them to Steff’s company for a generous profit of ₹2 lakhs per packet.
Enticed by the promise of substantial returns, Desai eagerly agreed, oblivious to the intricate web of deceit being spun around him. To facilitate the transaction, Steff directed Desai to contact an individual named Dr. Virendra, ostensibly the supplier of the herbal products. Desai complied, initiating communication with Dr. Virendra via email and expressing his interest in the business venture.
Dr. Virendra, a shadowy figure lurking behind the veil of cyberspace, appeared to validate Steff’s claims by promptly dispatching a sample packet upon receipt of ₹1 lakh from Desai. Encouraged by this initial transaction, Desai proceeded to place additional orders, entrusting Dr. Virendra with increasingly large sums of money.
However, as the transactions accumulated and Desai’s financial commitments deepened, cracks began to emerge in the facade of legitimacy meticulously crafted by Steff and Dr. Virendra. Suspicion gnawed at Desai’s conscience as Dr. Virendra, under various pretexts, incessantly demanded more money, exploiting Desai’s vulnerability and naivety.scam
Desperate for reassurance and redress, Desai implored Dr. Virendra to honor their agreement and deliver the promised returns. Yet, his pleas fell on deaf ears as both Dr. Virendra and Steff vanished into the abyss of anonymity, leaving Desai reeling from the devastating realization of betrayal.scam
With mounting apprehension, Desai finally mustered the courage to inspect the contents of the packets he had received, only to be confronted with a cruel revelation. Instead of the anticipated herbal products, the packets contained nothing but worthless powder and fried chips—a bitter reminder of the deceit that had befallen him.
