With 201 votes in parliament on Sunday, Shehbaz Sharif secured his second term as prime minister of Pakistan. His party, the PML-N, is set to lead a coalition government alongside Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the PML-N, endorsed his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif for the prime ministerial position, while party loyalist Sardar Ayaz Sadiq was nominated for the speaker of the national assembly role.
As part of the alliance agreement between PML-N and PPP, Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of Nawaz Sharif, assumed office as the chief minister of Punjab province on February 26, marking the country’s first woman chief minister of any province. Additionally, the agreement designated PPP’s senior leader, former Pakistan president b for the President’s post.
In the February 8 elections, Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N secured the second position, while independent candidates supported by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged with the highest number of seats but failed to achieve a parliamentary majority.
Results of Pakistan Election
According to Pakistan’s constitution, a party must secure 133 out of the contested seats in the 266-member national assembly to form a government.
– PTI-aligned independent candidates took home 93 of the 265 seats available in the national assembly.
Under Nawaz Sharif’s leadership, the PML-N won 75 seats in the national legislature.
– In the national legislature, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) secured 54 seats.
– The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P), a Karachi-based organization that fought for the rights of Indian immigrants who spoke Urdu during the partition, won 17 seats.
– A candidate’s death forced a postponement of the election for one seat.
Although Khan’s supporters won the most seats, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) decided to create a coalition government. Nawaz Sharif, the brother of Shehbaz Sharif and three-time prime minister, leads the PML-N, but he declined to become prime minister.
