On Wednesday, March 13th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to officiate the groundbreaking ceremonies for three semiconductor facilities, collectively valued at over Rs. 1.25 lakh crore. This significant development marks a pivotal moment in India’s technological advancement and economic growth. The event, titled ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat,’ is not only a milestone for the semiconductor industry but also symbolizes the nation’s commitment to fostering innovation and bolstering its position on the global stage.
Of the three facilities, two are located in Gujarat, a state known for its proactive approach to industrial development, while the third is situated in Assam, promising economic opportunities for the northeastern region. Beyond mere infrastructure, these facilities represent a strategic investment in India’s future, laying the groundwork for a robust semiconductor ecosystem that encompasses design, manufacturing, and technological innovation.
The program is set to engage students from nearly 60,000 educational institutions across the country, underlining the government’s emphasis on nurturing talent and fostering a culture of technological excellence. Prime Minister Modi’s call to action for young participants reflects a broader vision of leveraging India’s demographic dividend to drive innovation-led growth.
The semiconductor facilities to be inaugurated include a Semiconductor fabrication facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) and Outsourced Semi conductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities at Sanand in Gujarat and Morigaon in Assam, respectively. These facilities are strategically located to leverage regional strengths and create employment opportunities in areas that are poised for economic development.
Tata Electronics Private Limited is a key player in this transformative initiative, spearheading the establishment of two semiconductor facilities in Gujarat and Assam. The Dholera Special Investment Region’s semi conductor fabrication facility, envisioned as the country’s first commercial semi conductor fab, represents a significant leap forward in India’s technological capabilities. Similarly, the OSAT facility in Morigaon underscores the potential for inclusive growth by bringing advanced manufacturing to regions that have historically been underserved.
Furthermore, the OSAT facility in Sanand, Gujarat, will be developed by CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited, showcasing the collaborative effort between public and private entities to realize India’s semiconductor ambitions. With an estimated investment of approximately ₹7,500 crore, this facility is poised to become a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain, bolstering India’s competitiveness in the sector.
Prime Minister Modi’s vision to transform India into a global hub for semiconducto design, manufacturing, and technology development is reflected in these groundbreaking initiatives. By laying the foundation stones for these facilities, he is not only inaugurating physical infrastructure but also ushering in a new era of technological prowess and economic prosperity for the nation. As India embarks on this transformative journey, the semiconductor industry is poised to emerge as a cornerstone of its growth story, driving innovation, creating jobs, and propelling the country towards a brighter future.
