The long-standing speculation surrounding Priyanka Gandhi VadraтАЩs electoral debut has finally been put to rest. The Congress party has announced that Priyanka Gandhi will contest the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, a seat previously held by her brother Rahul Gandhi. Rahul, who also won from Raebareli in the recent elections, has decided to retain the Uttar Pradesh constituency, a stronghold for the Gandhi family.
After the announcement was made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi said, тАЬI am very happy to be able to represent Wayanad, and I will not let them feel his (Rahul Gandhi’s) absence.”
“I will work hard, and I will try my best to make everyone happy and be a good representative. I have a very old relationship with Raebareli and Amethi, and it cannot be broken. I will also help my brother in Raebareli. We will both be present in Raebareli and Wayanad.” Priyanka Gandhi┬аadded.
Rahul Gandhi┬аsaid it was a difficult decision for him as he has an emotional connection with both Rae Bareli and Wayanad.
“The last five years as a member of Parliament from Wayanad have been a very fantastic and enjoyable experience. The people of Wayanad gave me support and energy to fight in a very difficult time. I will never forget that.
“I will continue to visit Wayanad, and the promises we made to Wayanad will be fulfilled,” he said. Rahul Gandhi said both Rae Bareli and Wayanad “will get two MPs.”.
In 2019, Rahul Gandhi secured victory in Wayanad even as he lost the family bastion of Amethi to the BJPтАЩs Smriti Irani. His decision to contest from both constituencies was a strategic move, ensuring representation in both the North and the South. Now, with Priyanka Gandhi entering the electoral fray, the Congress aims to strengthen its presence in KeralaтАФa state integral to its overall political strategy.
PriyankaтАЩs entry signifies the CongressтАЩs commitment to engaging in the electoral battle in Kerala, even as the BJPтАЩs vote share in the state increases.
Political analysts view this move as an тАЬadoptionтАЭ of Wayanad rather than a mere shift. Wayanad remains crucial for the Gandhi family, especially since they lack direct representation in Tamil Nadu and have only Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar in Karnataka.
