Despite being distinct from PUBG Mobile, suspicions have been raised by the Indian government regarding BGMI’s data handling practices, including the possibility of user data being misused. These concerns have prompted discussions within government cybersecurity divisions about potentially discontinuing the app.
The involvement of individuals like Seema Haider, who reportedly met her partner through BGMI, has added to these suspicions. The Indian government worries that data collected by BGMI, including location and audio recordings, could be exploited for surveillance or cyberattacks. Krafton, the company behind BGMI, is under scrutiny, with a scheduled meeting next week set to provide clarity on the situation. BGMI had previously been banned in 2022 due to similar data security concerns, with its association with PUBG Mobile, banned earlier for comparable reasons, adding to suspicions. Despite efforts to distinguish itself from its predecessor, BGMI’s developers’ connections to a Chinese company heightened worries, leading to its removal in July 2022.
