Akhilesh Yadav targets BJP govt on bulldozer action in Farrukhabad, says ‘height of political cruelty’

Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh – Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has once again criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, this time over the recent bulldozer action in Farrukhabad. Yadav described the demolition of homes as the “height of political cruelty,” accusing the BJP of using such actions to instill fear and exact political revenge.

The Incident

On September 29, 2024, bulldozers were deployed in the village of Ukhra, located in the Amritpur assembly constituency of Farrukhabad. The operation resulted in the demolition of homes belonging to 25 poor families who had been residing there for years. According to Yadav, the affected families included many elderly, sick individuals, children, and women, who were left homeless during the ongoing rainy season.

Akhilesh Yadav’s Response

In a strongly worded post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Yadav condemned the BJP government for what he termed as an act of political vengeance. He questioned the morality of demolishing homes, especially when the ruling party leaders themselves had not built homes for the displaced.

“With every house that falls, BJP also falls even lower,” Yadav remarked. He emphasized that the BJP finds joy in demolishing well-established homes, which he sees as a reflection of their vindictive politics.

Political Reactions

The bulldozer actions have sparked significant political debate in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has defended the use of bulldozers, arguing that they are a symbol of law and order and a tool to remove illegal encroachments. However, Yadav and other opposition leaders argue that these actions are often targeted at the poor and marginalized, and are used to suppress dissent.

Supreme Court’s Involvement

Adding to the controversy, the Supreme Court of India recently intervened, halting bulldozer demolitions across the country until October 1, 2024. The court questioned the legality of demolishing homes without due process, highlighting the need for clear guidelines on such actions. Yadav welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, expressing hope that it would bring some relief to those affected by the demolitions.

Broader Implications

The ongoing conflict between Yadav and the BJP government underscores a broader debate about governance, justice, and human rights in India. The use of bulldozers has become a contentious issue, symbolizing the power dynamics between the ruling party and the opposition. Critics argue that the BJP’s approach is heavy-handed and lacks compassion, while supporters claim it is necessary to maintain law and order.
