Suicide – Dowry Harrasment
In Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, a harrowing sequence of events unfolded following the tragic suicide of Anshika Kesarwani, a 27-year-old woman who was found hanging at her in-laws’ residence on Monday night. Anshika had been married since February of the previous year. However, in the aftermath of her death, her family leveled accusations of dowry harassment against her in-laws, alleging that their mistreatment had driven Anshika to take her own life.
As news of Anshika’s death spread, tensions escalated rapidly. Members of Anshika’s family reportedly rushed to her in-laws’ house, confronting them about the alleged harassment and demanding accountability. Amidst the heated exchange, tempers flared, culminating in a devastating turn of events: Anshika’s relatives allegedly set fire to her in-laws’ house.
Tragically, the blaze claimed the lives of Anshika’s parents-in-law, Rajendra Kesarwani and Shobha Devi, who were unable to escape the inferno. Additionally, several others, including Anshika’s husband, were injured in the fire, further compounding the already profound tragedy.
Prayagraj City Deputy Commissioner of Police, Deepak Bhuker, provided insight into the chaotic scene that unfolded that night. The police received a distress call at 11 pm alerting them to Anshika’s suicide. Upon arrival, they encountered a volatile situation, with members from both sides engaged in a confrontation. Amidst the chaos, Anshika’s maternal relatives were accused of setting the fire that engulfed the house. Prompt police intervention prevented further casualties, as officers swiftly evacuated five individuals from the burning building and summoned firefighters to extinguish the flames.

Following the fire’s containment, a grim discovery was made within the charred remains of the house: the lifeless bodies of Anshika’s parents-in-law, Rajendra Kesarwani and Shobha Devi. Meanwhile, those injured in the blaze, including Anshika’s husband and other family members, were rushed to receive medical treatment.
The tragic incident not only claimed lives but also underscored the complexities surrounding issues such as dowry harassment and domestic disputes in Indian society. The aftermath of Anshika’s death serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for interventions to address such social issues and prevent further tragedies from befalling families across the nation.
