Throughout his tenure as CDS and Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, General Rawat spearheaded significant reforms aimed at integrating the Indian Armed Forces. Along with his wife and several members of his staff, he was en route to the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington when the aircraft went down near a residential area in the Nilgiris district. General Rawat and his wife were laid to rest with full military honors and a 17-gun salute at Brar Square Crematorium in Delhi Cantonment on December 10, 2021. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from across the political spectrum, as well as members of the armed forces and the general public.
