What is DRY Ice?

Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide (CO2). It’s a colorless, odorless, and non-flammable solid that is much colder than regular ice, at around -78 °C (-109 °F). Unlike regular water ice, which melts into a liquid state at 0 °C (32 °F), dry ice sublimates, meaning it changes directly from a solid to a gas without ever becoming a liquid.

Dry ice is used in a variety of applications, including:

  • Refrigeration: Because of its extremely low temperature, dry ice can be used to keep things cold or frozen during transport or storage. It is often used to ship perishable items, such as ice cream or medicine.
  • Medical applications: Dry ice is used in some medical procedures, such as wart removal and surgery.
  • Industrial cleaning: Dry ice can be used to clean surfaces without the use of water or chemicals. The CO2 gas from the sublimating dry ice blasts away dirt and contaminants.
  • Special effects: Dry ice is used to create fog effects in movies, theater productions, and haunted houses. The CO2 gas condenses in the air, creating a white fog.
