Depression
A tragic incident occurred due to depression on the newly inaugurated Atal Setu bridge, connecting south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, when a 43-year-old woman, identified as Kinjal Kantilal Shah, reportedly jumped off the bridge. Kinjal, a doctor by profession, had been battling depression for quite some time and was undergoing treatment. The police are still in the process of locating her body but have recovered a purported suicide note from her residence in Mumbai.
Kinjal resided with her father in the Navin Asha building on Dadasaheb Phalke Road in the Parel area of Mumbai. On Monday afternoon, she left her home and hailed a taxi, instructing the driver to take her to the Atal Setu bridge. As they approached the bridge, Kinjal requested the driver to stop the vehicle. Despite the driver’s reluctance, Kinjal insisted, eventually exiting the taxi and plunging into the sea from the bridge.
The Navi Mumbai police were promptly informed by the taxi driver, triggering a coordinated search operation involving coastal police, local villagers, and rescuers to trace Kinjal. However, her body remains unlocated as of now.
Prior to her disappearance, Kinjal had informed her father via phone call that she was heading out for some errands. Upon his return home, her father discovered the suicide note, where Kinjal expressed her intent to end her life by jumping off the Atal Setu bridge due to her prolonged battle with depression, spanning eight years.
The authorities began their investigation, analyzing CCTV footage, which confirmed Kinjal’s actions. The note found at her residence further shed light on her struggles with mental health issues.depression
The Atal Setu bridge, named the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, holds significance as the country’s longest sea bridge and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January. This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support systems in society.
